About me

Dr. Detlef Müller has a background in biology with a PhD from University of Hamburg on a subject in the field of environmental toxicology.

For more than 32 years he has worked in Procter & Gamble on the risk assessment for foods, household detergents, cosmetics, personal care, and absorbent hygiene products as well as on concepts of risk assessment in general. For the last 20 years he has focused on food products, evaluating both potential health risks and nutritional aspects, with a strong emphasis on assessment methodology in general. In this context he was involved in existing and developing food legislation and standard setting at national, European, and global (WHO and Codex Alimentarius) level.

Dr. Müller has been active at national and international level in various scientific and industry organisations, including e.g

• Presidency of the Society for Risk Analysis Europe
• Membership in the Board and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Life Science Institute Europe as well as chairmanship in several Task Forces and Expert Groups
• Membership in the Executive Committee of the Foundation for the German Society for Nutrition (DGE)
• Leading involvement in many expert groups of the European food industry association CIAA, the European Snacks Association ESA, the German food industry association (BLL), and the German sweets and snacks association (BDSI), as well as the European (AIJN) and German (VdF) fruit juice associations
• Acting as an advisor for the German delegation to several Codex Alimentarius Committees
• Leading involvement in several major EU research projects e.g. on functional foods (FUFOSE & PASSCLAIM), risk assessment (FOSIE), and risk/benefit assessment (BRAFO), as well as organising several major conferences in the field of nutrition and risk assessment, e.g. a joint conference between WHO, EFSA, and ILSI Europe on the risk assessment of genotoxic carcinogens

In addition, he has (co)-authored more than 60 major scientific publications and presented regularly at national and international conferences.
